AE 671 - Art and the Law Credits: 3 This course will examine the intersection of art and the law, both historically and in contemporary society. The material is divided into three main topic areas: intellectual property law (copyright, trademark, moral rights, economic rights, and right of publicity issues), First Amendment law (protest art, censorship of obscenity and pornography, and private and indirect censorship), and transnational and international law (international movement of art in peacetime and wartime, and preservation of art and cultural property). Along the way, it will discuss the problems of working artists in dealing with these issues and in their relationships with clients, galleries, and museums. No more than 6 credits may be taken from AE 670 -675.
