PHYS 421 - Quantum Mechanics I Credits: 3 The fundamental concepts and principles of quantum physics are developed in a mathematically rigorous way and applied to atomic, nuclear, and solid state physics. Topics include the fundamental postulates of quantum mechanics, the Schroedinger equation, and selected topics such as the harmonic oscillator, orbital and spin angular momentum, the hydrogen atom, identical particles, elementary matrix mechanics, multi-electron atoms, and collision theory. Normally offered in the fall semester of odd numbered years.
Prerequisite(s): PHYS 243 and MATH 270 , and (MATH 260 or MATH 264 ) (all prerequisites may be taken concurrently with permission of the instructor).
